Mercedes Benz Goes Hell For Sustainable Leather!

Jane Smith, Managing Director

Sustainable leather is really taking centre stage at the moment and it’s interesting to see some big name brands starting to make this a top priority.

Luxury car manufacturer Mercedes Benz has just announced that it will be rolling out resource-conserving processed genuine leather to all its model series from 2023 onwards.

The company has really put sustainability at the heart of all it does, beginning in the early stages of product development.

The composition of all materials is now being considered, with viable alternatives being investigated. The aim is to design vehicles that are as resource efficient and as environmentally friendly as they can be, throughout their entire life cycle.

Where the processed leather is concerned, it really is the best of both worlds for customers looking to enjoy genuine leather interiors, while prioritising sustainability. As of next year, all model series will come kitted out with sustainably produced and processed leather, with considerations covering everything from livestock breeding to the tanning process.

The company also requires its suppliers to comply with the Animal Welfare Committee’s 5 Freedoms of Animal Welfare with regards to livestock breeding. It also only works with suppliers where the leather supply chain is free from illegal deforestation of any kind, as well as ensuring that grazing areas don’t risk endangerment or loss of natural forests.

If you’re the proud owner of a Mercedes Benz model series or any other kind of car with beautiful leather interiors, focusing on maintenance and upkeep is a great way of ensuring that your materials stand the test of time.
