The tools and equipment to restore black leather.

Restoring black leather can be done with many different products not just a black leather dye.

You can restore black leather using a leather colour enhancer, you can also use a black leather repair paint to repaint pigment leather, if you are dying leather for the first time for leather crafting then a leather dye can be used to dye the leather for your leather tooling craft project.

All leather at some point has to be dyed before its painted, or it's left as a dyed through leather only. Leather can be dyed any colour not just with black leather dye.

Depending on the leather type you are trying to dye will determine the products you need. Natural products like the antique colour restorers cream is a great example of giving leather a brand new look very quickly and blending in to the surrounding areas easily.

From a simple scratch to a full-blown restoration, we have a black leather dye for the job, fading and sun damage is very common on black leather, it can go a white shade depending if its painted with black leather paint or if its dyed with black leather dye, sometimes it can have this almost bronze or blue look to it as black is made with an underlying blue dye.

Steering wheels can take a great deal of wear and tear with heat and sweat constantly grabbing the wheels can easily break down the black leather and grease can get into the leather causing the black leather to need a restoration with a black steering wheel repair kit. This kit can be used to re dye the leather, fix scratches in the black leather and to restore sun damaged leather.

Car seats can become worn on bolsters where you are sliding in and out of the seat, this causes a great deal of stress on the edges of the seats, when a black seat wears it can show through the black leather as a paler colour almost white appearance, if black leather has gone like this then a leather colour enhancer can be used to dye the damaged areas, cleaning the seats first of all has to be done using a leather cleaning kit. Once the leather has been deep cleaned with the leather cleaner, its advised to wipe the leather down with an alcohol cleaner to sanitise the surface fully. Once this has been carried out then you can start to apply the black leather colour enhancer to the surface in a circular motion, this can be left to dry and fully cure to dye the leather, this is then sealed in with a leather protection cream from the leather cleaning kit.

Fixing larger damage, deep scratches, and colour loss with black leather dye.

Fixing heavier damaged black leather can be carried out the process needed would depend on the severity of the damage to be repaired.

With these black classic jaguar e type seats they have dried out, obtained tears, scuffs, and colour loss, this type of damage can be fixed with a black colour dye repair kit.

First step is to resolve the cracked surface coating, this has to be done with the leather prep stages, the prep stages is the most important part of the leather restoration of your black leather car seats.

When the seats feel dried out and the surface begins to crack, this is due to lack of protection being applied and the painted black leather surface becomes dry and in time this dries out the leather itself. This has to be removed with the leather prep, this removes the old surface coating and prepares the leather to take the new black leather dye paint.

Tears and rips can be fixed once the preparation stages have been carried out to the black leather seats, this can be done using the black backing fabric that’s in the leather glue repair kit, this kit comes with everything you require to repair tears and rips in leather.

Once you have allowed all the tears to dry you can start by applying some fillers, depending on the size of the cracking this would depend on what type of filler is required, you can either use a fine filler for the fine cracks like flexi filler or for bigger deeper cracking then the thicker paste heavy filler can be used.

From seats with a great deal of damage as above, to black leather car seats with damage to black bolsters, the process to resolving is the same, from a full car seat to a bolster, the prep stage has to be carried out, applying the black leather colourant dye paint, then a clear coat sealer has to be applied to seal in the black leather seats again.

Black Dyes and Black Leather Colourant Paints are two very different products, dyes are pure and can be sued to dye naked leather like crust leather, that has never been dyed before, whereas the black leather paints can only re colour pigmented leather items, this is to re colour scratches in black leather car seats, sofas, black leather motorcycle suits and more.

There  are other types of products you can use on leather like antique restorer creams, withy the antique restorer creams, you will have to deep clean the leather, then use an alcohol cleaner to de sanitise the full surface allowing the pores of the leather to be opened before applying the black antique restorer creams to these black leather chairs, these are aniline leather, so require a different type of restoration process to black pigmented painted leather seats.
